Who knew torturing children could be so cute?
This is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time (Vimeo won’t embed on WordPress, so you have to follow the link – see after the jump). There was a story on WNYC’s RadioLab about torturing adorable children with the presence of a marshmallow, with the promise that if they waited to eat it they would get a second marshmallow. The first experiment was done in the 60s or the 70s, so I don’t think this is the original video, but it’s just as cute. I mean, the girl at 2:15!!!!!
According to they guy they interviewed on RadioLab, children under the age of 4 couldn’t understand delayed gratification and wouldn’t wait. Over the age of four, they’d wait at least a little bit. What’s more, he went back 15 years or so later and found that there was a significant relationship between how long a child could wait for the marshmallow and how high their SAT scores were. Significant, as in around 100 points difference. Something else parents have to worry about.
